Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit(ICU) of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was set up in 2003. It is staffed by 6 doctors(1 is an associate professor) and 19 nurses(14 are primary nurses). Five of the doctors(83%) have obtained master degrees and 14 of the nurses(71%) have earned bachelor degrees, among whom 2 studied abroad.

The 11-bed ICU is equipped with advanced devices, including PB-840 respirators, PB-740 respirators, PB-760 respirators, PB-7200 respirators, PENTAX tracheobronchofiberscopes and HP defibrillators for synchronized defibrillation, non synchronized defibrillation, endocardial temporary cardiac pacing, and internal and external defibrillation. The ICU also has multifunctional electrocardiogram monitors, air fluidized beds and infusion pumps. Patients suffering from shock, heart failure, respiratory failure, acute renal failure, acute liver function failure, acute myocardial infarction, malignant arrhythmia, septemia, multiple organ failure, severe abdominal trauma and severe craniocerebral injury can seek treatment in ICU. The ICU also treats patients who have undergone liver or kidney transplantation and cardiac surgery. Hemodynamic monitoring performed with Swan-Ganz catheter technique, invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation, internal and external cardiac pacing, coronary intervention, continuous hemofiltration, plasmapheresis, arterial and venous catheterization for artificial liver, endotracheal intubation and tracheotomy are carried out on these patients. 

ICU is one of the best intensive care units in Zhuhai and was awarded the title “Guangdong Advanced Unit” in 2009.
