Endocrinology & Metabolism

The Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism, established in 2001, was recognized as a key department of the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in 2012. In the past decade, the department has fully devoted itself to providing best clinical care in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, gout, adrenal disease, pituitary disease, and other metabolic & endocrinal diseases. In addition, it is committed to teaching and training undergraduate and graduate medical students, conducting researches on the etiology of diseases, as well as finding new treatment. After a decade of rapid development, the department takes a leading role in carrying out fundamental and clinical researches on diabetes, obesity, thyroid disease in Pearl River Delta. 


There are 37 staff members at various levels in the department, among which 12 are specialist doctors and 15 are specialist nurses. All doctors, including 2 chief physicians and 5 associate chief physicians, have at least acquired a master degree. The department has 4 master supervisors, 2 of which used to study oversea. Staff in the department are holding important positions in various organizations: president of Zhuhai Endocrinology Association, vice-resident of Zhuhai Diabetes Association, members of the Guangdong Diabetes Association, members of the Guangdong Endocrinology Association, members of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Nutrition Association, editors of the Journal of Diabetes Mellitus, editors of the Chinese Journal of Diabetes Mellitus, etc.


The department has outpatient clinic, inpatient ward (40 beds) and one diabetes educational center. Special service can be provided including continuous subcutaneous insulin injection (Insulin Pump), dynamically glucose monitoring system, diabetic foot screening, thin core needle biopsy and cytology of thyroid nodes. Diabetes educational center offers lectures and individual consultation for diabetic patients twice a month, and also facilitates diabetes care between community hospitals and Grade III-A hospitals.

 

During the past decade, the department has led and participated in more than 4 key and major research projects sponsored by the Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 15 projects sponsored by government. Over 100 original papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals, and 11 students were awarded master degrees.
